In Memoriam
Dr. Irving S. Kolin, a prominent Winter Park psychiatrist who was once credited with saving the life of the singer Eddie Fisher, has passed away. Kolin graduated Phi Beta Kappa from college, earning undergraduate and medical degrees at universities in upstate New York and doing his residency at Cornell Medical School. Friends and colleagues described Kolin as a brilliant and passionate doctor who engaged in pioneering mental-health clinical trials at his Kolin Research Group and counseled everyone from neighbors to celebrities during decades of practice. Kolin became chief of psychiatry at Orange Memorial Hospital, which would later become Orlando Regional Medical Center. He served as president of the Orange County Mental Health Association and on the faculties of both the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida. He helped found UCF's College of Medicine. "Being a doctor was not his vocation. It was his passion. It was his purpose," said Barbara West, the former WFTV- Channel 9 news anchor and a close friend of Kolin.
